Herman Brood (1946 - 2001)

Singer, artist, pianist, actor and author Herman Brood died on 11 July 2001. During his student days at the Art Academy in Arnhem he became an active musician and played the piano in a number of small bands. Not much later he came into contact with alcohol and drugs, which he struggled with his entire life. On this page: a look back at the life of Herman Brood.

Herman Brood & His Wild Romance

After several incidents and persistent drug use, he was kicked out of the band Cuby and the Blizzards. That meant the start of his own formation: Herman Brood & His Wild Romance. In 1978, they scored the hit Saturday Night, Brood's best-known song. The band had many different formations with dozens of musicians and remained active until his death in 2001.

André Hazes and Herman Brood

André Hazes and Herman Brood met in a café at the Leidseplein, where Hazes (still at the beginning of his career) sang life songs to a small audience. Brood wanted to sing along with Hazes and the evening grew into a "gigantic party night", according to Hazes. Since then, they recorded several singles as an occasional duo.

"... een wereldgozer. Je hebt nooit geen last van die man." - André Hazes

Drug and alcohol abuse

During the last years of his life, the withdrawal symptoms became increasingly severe. He suffered from incontinence, epilepsy and delirium tremens as a result of years of heavy amphetamine and alcohol use. He appeared in public more and more often with parrot Cor on his head. In his last interviews he increasingly referred to death.
