A year along the banks

On July 15, 2021, five photographers from the occasional collective DOCKS went into the disaster area in western Germany where devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall killed at least 190 people. The photographers would eventually document the consequences of the flood, which also caused a lot of misery in Limburg and Belgium, for a year. The photos can be found in the image bank of the ANP via photo agency Laif.
July 15, 2021 - A family on the balcony of their home in Ahrweiler. On the first day after the flood, the extent of the devastation was difficult to estimate, resulting in a catastrophic lack of equipment and resources in the flooded area.

July 17, 2021 - Volunteer firefighters from Vettelschoss take a break in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Christian Lehmann, second from the left, has been involved in the volunteer fire service for over 20 years and has never experienced a situation like this. You can't let events affect you and you just have to do your job," he says.
July 17, 2021 - Wrecked washing machines and other electronic equipment are dumped separately at a makeshift dump in Rheinbach.
July 24, 2021 - A resident of Odenthal builds a drainage canal through his garden to drain water.
August 8, 2021 - Crystal and Eva at a holiday camp in Sprendlingen. The director of the pony farm had decided to let the affected children stay at the holiday camp for free. At Crystal, the basement was completely destroyed, Eva's family lost their home in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. At the holiday camp, the two became best friends.
September 11, 2021 - Maximilian Koehler smashes a wall in the extension of Blessem Castle in Erftstadt-Blessem. After the family was allowed back into the castle, construction work started immediately. The castle is currently inhabited by one person to prevent night thefts.
February 5, 2022 - Two volunteers from the aid organization "Dachzeltnomaden" are working on the outer facade of an affected house in Dernau.
March 23, 2022 - Maritta Schmitz relaxes during an acupuncture treatment on the banks of the Ahr on the grounds of the AHRche eV, Association for Disaster Relief and Reconstruction. Dr. Ingrid Reuther offers the treatment free of charge for those affected and helpers.
July 14, 2022 - On the anniversary of the flood, a memorial event is held in Walporzheim, as in many other villages.
